The American Society of Health Economists will hold their 8th Annual Conference in Washington, DC at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel on June 23-26, 2019.
The American Society of Health Economists (ASHEcon) is a professional organization dedicated to promoting excellence in health economics research in the U.S. Health economics has emerged as a distinct and successful field in economics — a large community of researchers bringing theoretical and empirical insights based on the discipline of economics to policy-relevant issues in health care costs, outcomes, health behavior and health care delivery. Since its first conference, hosted at the University of Wisconsin in 2006, ASHEcon's meeting has quickly become the premier health economics conference in the U.S., providing a forum for presenting emerging ideas, empirical results, and methodological advances in health economics research and for facilitating the development of the next generation of health economics scholars.
The theme of this year's conference is the Crossroads of Public Policy and Health Economics and aims to provide a forum for emerging ideas and empirical results of current health economics research to be showcased and discussed.
We hope that applicants will submit abstracts that are relevant to the field of health economics and demonstrate rigorous theoretical and empirical research methodologies.
The Host Committee of the 8th Annual Conference of the American Society of Health Economists invites individuals to submit proposals for consideration by the scientific review committee. We are soliciting individual abstracts to be integrated into sessions, organized sessions made up of 3 abstracts, and this year, ASHEcon is also seeking submissions for Policy Roundtables and Spotlight Sessions.
Roundtables are not abstract dependent, but rather feature speakers who will discuss a topic from varying perspectives and draw the audience into a discussion on the topic. Roundtable proposals should include no more than 1 moderator and at least 2 presenters. Examples of potential titles include: How to Advance Evidence-Based Healthcare Policy at the Local Level, Promoting Health Equity through Policy, and Regulation and Competition in the Healthcare Sector: What Have We Learned?
Spotlight Sessions are 90-minute sessions that will focus on special interest or career enhancement topics. The sessions are not abstract dependent. Examples of potential titles include: Introduction to Grant Writing, Talking to Policymakers, Prepping for the Job Market Season, Translating Research into Policy, and Women and Minorities in Health Economics. Sessions may be delivered by no more than 1 moderator and any number of presenters.
Please verify your membership status here before you submit your application. Named presenters for each abstract must be current ASHEcon members or the session/abstract proposal cannot be completed. If all presenter(s) are active ASHEcon members, they will be able to fully submit their proposal. If not, the presenter(s) will need to join ASHEcon, renew their membership, or pay a $100 submission fee. If you pay your membership by check, you won't be able to submit your submission free of charge until your check is received. Membership is not required nor is there a fee to submit a Policy Roundtable or Spotlight Session.
Authors will receive immediate confirmation of abstract submission, thus obtaining a link that will allow them to log back into their abstracts, should changes need to be made. The submission process will be divided into several steps to make it easy for the submitter and to encourage the submission of all required information. Submitters who are interrupted before completing all steps can log back in and resume where they left off. Abstracts can be completed and repeatedly modified at any time up until the submission deadline.
All individual abstracts must be 500 words or less. Submitters will be asked to categorize their abstract into 1 of the 15 Program Areas. Individually submitted abstracts will be paired with discussants that can offer constructive suggestions on the abstract, thus we encourage submitters to include a suggestion for discussant (either pre-arranged with the individual or not). We will do our best to make that happen, but recognize that it might not be possible, in which case we'll do our best to identify someone else.
Individual abstracts not selected by the scientific review committee for inclusion in a session will be considered for inclusion in the poster session if requested by the author during the submission process.
If you are interested in submitting a session but need additional abstracts to complete your session, we invite you to review the Single Abstract Listing which will be updated weekly as submissions are received. This listing includes the program area and abstracts for each single abstract submitted for inclusion in the 2019 ASHEcon Conference. If you find an abstract (or abstracts) in the listing that you would like to use to create or fill out a panel, we encourage you to reach out to the author (contact information is in the document) and see if they would like to be part of the panel. If they would like to be part of the panel, they would need to withdraw their single abstract submission (they can do this by logging into the abstract system via the link in the confirmation email received when the abstract was submitted) and resubmit the abstract as part of the new panel. Fully submitted organized session submissions have an average acceptance rate of 80% compared to 40% for single abstract submissions.
Organized sessions must have exactly 3 abstracts with 1 presenting author and 1 discussant per abstract, plus any co-authors. We encourage you to create sessions composed of presenting authors and discussants from different backgrounds. Submitters will be asked to categorize their session into 1 of the 15 Program Areas. An abstract of 500 words or less is required for each abstract in the session. Co-presenters can either complete their own abstract submission or allow the organizer to do so. Please note that abstracts within organized sessions may be rejected, accepted as a poster (if indicated that the presenting author was willing to accept a poster assignment), or transferred to another session. All transferred or rejected abstracts will be replaced with a different abstract.
Roundtable submissions should include no more than 1 moderator and at least 2 presenters. Submitters will be asked to categorize their roundtable into 1 of the 15 Program Areas. Submissions for policy roundtables must be 500 words or less. Submitters will be asked to explain their proposed roundtable and provide details about what they anticipate attendees will take away from the session. Roundtables are not abstract dependent.
Sessions may be delivered by no more than 1 moderator and any number of presenters. Submissions for spotlight sessions must be 500 words or less. Submitters will be asked to explain their proposed session and provide details about what they anticipate attendees will take away from the session. The sessions are not abstract dependent.

Abstracts are limited to 500 words. This system will accept symbols. You do not need to include bibliographic or reference information with your abstract.
Abstracts may be formatted as you see fit. ASHEcon does not require that abstracts be submitted with specific font, paragraph, or layout requirements as long as it is easy for reviewers to read and is 500 words or less in length.
