The American Society of Health Economists (ASHEcon) will hold their ASHEcon 2022 in Austin, TX at the Austin Hilton Hilton Austin from June 26 — 29, 2022.
ASHEcon is a professional organization dedicated to promoting excellence in health economics research in the U.S. Health economics has emerged as a distinct and successful field in economics, and ASHEcon is a large community of researchers bringing theoretical and empirical insights based on the discipline of economics to policy-relevant issues in health care costs, outcomes, health behavior and health care delivery. Since its first conference, hosted at the University of Wisconsin in 2006, ASHEcon's meeting has quickly become the premier health economics conference in the U.S., providing a forum for presenting emerging ideas, empirical results, and methodological advances in health economics research and facilitating the development of the next generation of health economics scholars.
ASHEcon is closely monitoring the situation regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. If circumstances render it unsafe or impossible for a large group to meet in Austin, TX next summer, we will adjust plans for the conference and update you promptly.
Submissions
Submitted abstracts must be relevant to the field of health economics and demonstrate rigorous theoretical and empirical research methodologies. Below, you'll find definitions of each type of session.
We invite individuals to submit proposals for consideration by the scientific review committee. We are soliciting the following:
- Individual abstracts to be integrated into sessions,
- Organized sessions made up of 3 abstracts,
- Emerging Scholar submissions to be integrated into sessions,
- Policy Roundtables, and
- Spotlight Sessions
Once you begin the submission process, you will receive a confirmation email and a link that will allow you to log back into your submission, should changes need to be made or if you don't complete your submission. You may modify your submission at any time prior to the submission deadline.
New this year, there is no fee to submit an abstract.
Program Areas
Instructions
The following submission types will be solicited in the conference's 18 program areas:
Individual Abstracts
A submission based on a single paper. Individual abstracts must be 500 words or less. Each abstract will be scored on its own merit and those chosen for presentation at the conference will be grouped into sessions. We encourage submitters to include a suggestion for a discussant (either pre-arranged with the individual or not) and, while we will try to arrange for the suggested discussant to participate in the session, this may not always be possible. If it is not possible, we'll do our best to identify someone else. Individual abstracts not selected for inclusion in the conference will be considered for a poster presentation if requested by the author during the submission process.
Note that abstracts submitted as Organized Sessions rather than individually have an average acceptance rate of 80% compared to 40% for Single Abstract submissions.
If you are interested in submitting a session but need additional abstracts to complete your session, we invite you to review the Single Abstract Listing which will be updated weekly as submissions are received. This listing includes the program area and abstracts for each single abstract submitted for inclusion in the 2022 Conference. If you find an abstract (or abstracts) in the listing that you would like to use to create a session, we encourage you to reach out to the author (contact information is in the document) and see if they would like to be part of the session. If an author chooses to be part of the session submission, they will need to withdraw their single abstract submission (they can do this by logging into the abstract system via the link in the confirmation email received when the abstract was submitted) and resubmit the abstract as part of the new panel.
Organized Sessions
Organized sessions must have exactly three papers with one presenting author and one discussant for each paper asnd one session chair. Each abstract must be 500 words or less and include information (name and email address) on Co-Authors. Co-Presenters can either complete their own abstract submission or allow the organizer to do so. We strongly encourage you to consider diversity in presenters when assembling sessions, in keeping with ASHEcon's objectives and values. All participants including discussants and chairs must register for the conference. Please note that abstracts within organized sessions may be rejected, accepted as a poster, or transferred to another session. All transferred or rejected abstracts will be replaced with a different abstract.
Emerging Scholars
Emerging Scholar submissions are open only to PhD students. All abstracts must be 500 words or less. Each abstract will be scored on its own merit those chosen for presentation at the conference will be grouped into sessions. Sessions will, if possible, be organized around a common theme. Discussants and moderators will be senior scholars with expertise in research of the student's paper. Emerging Scholars submissions not chosen for an Emerging Scholars Session, will be considered for an organized session or poster. Please do not submit your abstract twice.
Policy Roundtables
Roundtables are not abstract dependent, but rather feature speakers who will discuss a topic from varying perspectives and draw the audience into a discussion on the topic. Roundtable submissions should include no more than one moderator and at least two presenters. Submissions for policy roundtables must be 500 words or less. We strongly encourage you to assemble sessions with diverse participants, in keeping with ASHEcon's objectives and values. Examples of potential titles include: “The Future of Prescription Drug Reimbursement” and “Assessing and Accelerating State Implementation of Value-Based Payment Reforms”. All participants must register for the conference.
Spotlight Sessions
Spotlight sessions are not abstract dependent. Spotlight Sessions focus on special interest or career enhancement topics. Spotlight sessions must include one moderator and any number of presenters. Submissions for spotlight sessions must be 500 words or less. We strongly encourage you to assemble sessions with diverse participants, in keeping with ASHEcon's objectives and values. The sessions are not abstract dependent. Examples of potential titles include: "Career Opportunities for Health Economists in Government and Public Service" and "Translating Research into Policy: How Claims Data Can Help Shape Public Policy on Healthcare and Assess Its Impact". All participants must register for the conference.

There are four steps to the abstract submission process.
- Title - Enter the title of the proposal (single paper or organized session) and submitting author's email address.
- Authors & Institutions - Enter contact information for submitting, presenting, and all other authors.
- Abstract Text - Insert the body of the abstract here. Abstracts may be submitted by copying and pasting your text into the provided text box.
- Confirmation - Please review all information carefully and complete the submission.

Please provide paper and session titles that are no more than 15 words long.

AUTHORS & INSTITUTIONS
Please list all authors in the order you wish for them to appear in the program.
Please include the submitting author, as anyone not listed in your submission will not appear in the program.
Please include complete contact information for each author.
When listing institutions, list ONLY the parent institution.

ABSTRACT TEXT
Abstracts are limited to 500 words. This system will accept symbols. You do not need to include bibliographic or reference information with your abstract.
Abstracts may be formatted as you see fit. ASHEcon does not require that abstracts be submitted with specific font, paragraph, or layout requirements as long as it is easy for reviewers to read and is 500 words or less in length.
